October Webinar
Spatial Fractionation and Heavy Ions
25 October 2022, 17:00–18:30 CEST/GMT+2
Learn about spatial fractionation and radiotherapy, why it is relevant to study the FLASH effect with
high-LET particles, how can we technically implement heavy ion FLASH, what are the pre-clinical
results of heavy ion FLASH and many more.
Webinar Chair:
Dr. Cristian Fernandez-Palomo, Switzerland
University of Bern, Institute of Anatomy
Dr. Cristian Fernandez-Palomo is a former Medical Radiation Technologist (BSc. University of Valparaiso, Chile) who further specialized in Radiobiology at McMaster University in Canada (MSc in 2012, PhD in 2015).
Cristian is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Bern in Switzerland. There, he conducts preclinical research on Microbeam Radiation Therapy in close collaboration with the European Synchrotron. The synchrotron can deliver an average dose rate of 14000 Gy/s, enabling spatial fractionation and FLASH radiotherapy simultaneously.
Cristian’s main research interest is to uncover how to better prescribe Microbeam Radiation Therapy and other spatially fractionated modalities to improve cancer survival.

Meet Our Speakers:
Prof. Marco Durante, Germany
GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenfroschung, Biophysics
Prof. Dr. Marco Durante is Director of the Biophysics Department at GSI Helmholtz Center and Full Professor of Physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. He dedicated his research efforts to the biophysics of high-energy charged particles, with applications in cancer therapy and space radiation protection. He is generally recognized as world leader in the field of particle radiobiology and medical physics and is co-author of over 400 scientific publications (h-index=54) and one patent on proton therapy. He has been awarded several prizes for his contributions to charged particle biophysics, including the 2013 ERRS Bacq & Alexander award and the 2020 RRS Failla award.
Dr. Yolanda Prezado, France
Institut Curie, Signalisation, Radiobiology and Cancer
Dr. Yolanda Prezado is the founder and responsible of the interdisciplinary team “New Approaches in Radiotherapy (NARA)” based at Institut Curie (France). The main research avenue of the team NARA is the conception and development of innovative methods based on the use of the spatial fractionation of the dose.
Yolanda Prezado is a board certified medical physicist (Spain,France) with a multisciplinary background. She has been developing her research in radiotherapy, first at Hospital Universitario de Salamanca (Spain), then at the Biomedical Beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation facility (Grenoble, France) and, since 2011, at French National Research Centre. Her research interests include radiobiology, dose calculations (Monte Carlo simulations) and small field dosimetry. She is the Deputy Spokeperson of the International Biophysics Collaboration.
